Character and Abilities
Bentley's personality goes through quite a few changes throughout the course of the series, having started out as a high-strung but sarcastic and loyal character huddled in the team van and handling all the information in safety back during Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. Of the Cooper Gang, he has likely struggled with the most obstacles to overcome in becoming who he is today: worrying for Sly through his quest for revenge, having to save Sly from Clockwerk's gas chamber or lose him forever, taking to the field for the first time, being left all alone in the jungle after his friends were betrayed and arrested, having to break them out of jail, being shot out of the sky then held at gunpoint and robbed, Murray being captured again, being carried off by Clock-La, being crippled and feeling useless, losing Murray and later trying to reconnect with him, having to open up to more than just Sly and Murray, falling in love and feeling rejected, getting the girl, having doubts about his role in the Cooper Gang and reaffirming that bond, anxiety over the loss of his girlfriend and obligation to his friends, the betrayal by his girlfriend and having to overcome his broken heart to do the right thing, and then the loss of Sly again. It's a lot to go through in only a few short years for any person, but he ultimately faced every challenge and has gotten stronger rather than folded under the pressure.
Some things about him have changed very little or not at all though, and among those core character traits is a lopsided sense of morality that flies in the face of man's inherent selfishness...which he shares with Sly and Murray, as stated by the Contessa in Sly 2: Band of Thieves. He is the brains behind a gang of master thieves, but they really only target criminals and more often than not those criminals' plans are foiled and they wind up in prison by the time the Cooper Gang is done. A sense of humor that sometimes falls a little flat and a level of sass that surfaces when he's a bit irked or smug keep him from being to serious even in some jobs. He can joke and make snarky comments, and throw insults really well given the incentive and mood to do so. He remains the same smart but cautious person at heart, always wanting as much information as possible on a situation to determine the best course of action with the least risk to him or his friends. Focus and attention to detail, along with the determination to keep at something until he's succeeded or has the best possible way to succeed make him a strong asset to his allies and very capable of managing on his own when he has to. He has a lot of pride in his intelligence isn't above boasting his genius when things are going well, but he respects that not everyone is as smart as him and doesn't belittle them for it usually.
His drive to know and be as prepared as possible leads him to read about quite a lot of things...as he often says "I've read about this" when explaining new things to his friends. His knowledge goes far beyond demolition and RC skills, as he knows a lot of history, opera, and other seemingly trivial things too. And he puts any knowledge he gains to productive use as needed. But when a plan is compromised...or his laptop stolen, he panics or becomes very noticeably agitated until things settle. To him the plan is safety and stability in a dangerous situation and if things go really wrong he worries that something bad will happen and would rather retreat to replan if possible than push ahead and the worst happen.
While he is willing to get his hands dirty, especially when he has to, dangerous situations still scare him and he can be terse and a bit high-strung when reminded of the level of danger. He's comfortable in the field now and less timid in this aspect than he used to be, but would still probably prefer the safety of using RC for jobs when possible. Overall he's much less of a timid person and way more of a confident one than when he first started out. He has a lot of determination, shown in his willingness to do whatever it takes to save his friends and the sheer amount of work he puts into his plans and completing tasks. He's even the most willing of the Gang to put aside differences with old or current enemies for a greater goal when there's more to be gained through cooperation.
Since being crippled, he's developed quite the devious side and can be very mean in his scheming, doing things like unleashing giant wolves on unsuspecting guards and dropping strung up boats on their heads, or having them fed to crocodiles...as well as setting guards on Sly during their training in the Hazard Room to make sure he has to put effort into the exercise. He's also not above mocking, gloating at, or being outright insulting to his enemies...which is really also the only time that he'll hold a lack of intelligence against someone. He takes great pride in this new side of himself but also has a soft side that, if riled, may provoke some of the more malicious plans.
Bentley doesn't like to see the defenseless being taken advantage of. This could be in the killing or mistreatment of harmless animals, or the disrespect for cultural landmarks both natural and man-made. He's a city-guy, but he's actually a bit of an environmentalist. Even when his plans involve wildlife in a big way, the animals are never hurt. The same goes for good people he has to involve in dangerous situations, he doesn't like to and if there is actually a risk to them he will show concern for their safety....but criminals and guards aren't so lucky. If someone is, or is willingly working for, a person doing despicable things for any sort of personal gain then he has no pity or concern for what happens to them. and if he needs them out of the way for a plan to work he has no problems sneaking a bomb into their pocket to do it.
One trait that has always been there, but was reinforced and strengthened in Sly 2 and 3, is the level of loyalty to his close friends and his belief in the bonds of brotherhood. Bentley is very protective and conscious of the people he cares for and generally puts their needs before his own when things come up. He tries to do the best he can for them, keep their spirits up when they get low, and generally goes above and beyond for their well-being. He will feel guilty if he wasn't there for them, even if it was justified, and will always step up for them when they need him...but that's IF they need him. If he's confident they'll succeed without them then he'll show his support by letting them show that they can.
But on the note of bonds, Bentley has a hard time dealing with betrayal by someone he's become attached to. Just some person that he's been cooperating with betraying him makes him upset and he'll want payback. But someone who has found a place in his heart or who he loves betraying him would be a temporarily debilitating blow to him emotionally. It's happened once and he recovered from it fairly quickly, all things considered, because he realized that he was needed and therefore he couldn't wallow in his misery. But if it happened again he would probably take longer, especially if there weren't other important immediate matters that had to be dealt with.
Bentley is a science buff who, despite the fact that the Gang has dealt with the supernatural several times, believes most subjects of the supernatural to be silly superstition. He acknowledges that it does exist and doesn't belittle what he's seen with his own eyes, but that's kind of the thing: he wants proof. Even if he's read about the legends or heard the rumors he's skeptical if he hasn't encountered it. He has encountered ghosts and voodoo magic, bad mojo, magic dragons, hopping vampires, and evil masks before...but that doesn't automatically mean that castle their has a mystic moat monster or that bite will make this guy a werewolf.
Surprisingly despite his somewhat high-strung and computer geeky nature, Bentley has a lot of things he likes to do. He likes to hang around with his friends and play video games, sit around a campfire, take goofy photos, ping pong, enjoy books, hang out at the beach, gamble, watch musicals, sight-see, and most other activities that the average person does. He also really likes spy movies, which he does occasionally take his cues from on jobs. Bentley has adjusted well to his handicap and doesn't resent his friends for his condition. There are times when he wishes he could still use his legs, but for the most part it doesn't bother him.
Abilities
Bentley's greatest weapon is his mind. He's highly intelligent and capable of using available information to devise clever strategies that rarely fail without outside interference. He's a pro hacker, and can crack pretty much any system directly or remotely. He has also mastered finding vault combinations in the paintings that hide the vault in question...this being the only thief skill he does better than Sly. He's got a background in electrical engineering, mechanics, and demolitions...among who knows how many other things. And having traveled much of the world he knows many languages.
Though confined to his wheelchair, he is still a walking arsenal...so to speak, using a combination of bombs, a dart gun that he uses with his Binoccucom for pinpoint accuracy, an RC chopper that drops various bombs, and an RC car equipped with a blaster. He'd also created the Grapple-Cam, a mini camera equipped with a powerful grappling hook and later with a turret, that he could control remotely. He's upgraded his dart and bomb arsenal from just sleep darts and explosive bombs as well, now carrying a wider variety of ammo that can be used in either weapon: explosives, sleep ammo, powerful shock ammo, rage ammo filled with spice to make enemies more aggressive toward anything nearby, confusion ammo to making it harder to tell friend from foe, and even shrink ammo that works form only a few minutes. He can also attack using his chair by spinning and extending the wheels out to strike his enemies.
His wheelchair, of his own design and then later upgraded further, is outfitted with a bomb dispenser, retractable mechanical arms that do whatever he needs them to (picking pockets, dropping bombs, playing ping pong for him while he reads, and giving his shell massages...to name a few things), and boosters to aid his jumps by letting him go higher or float across large gaps and his speed when he needs to. He can get around pretty well in the chair without the boosters though, pushing himself quickly enough to keep up with people running on foot and even being able to make it hop, and can also hang from edges with the chair if his upper body can rest on the edge in question.
Naturally he can't swim with or without the chair, and being knocked out of it leaves him practically helpless since crawling with his hands wouldn't get him far very fast. He's allergic to both tomatoes and lemons, and anything made with a lot of either causes trouble for him. He also has asthma, but likely not severe...though he can temporarily work around these conditions if he needs to.
